How it works

Three steps to a precise mix.

Most calculators ask for a total amount and a ratio. We start with the actual hair, then work backwards to a formula you can trust.

01

Tell us about the hair

Length, density, gray coverage percentage, and the service you're doing, from full color to root touch-up, balayage, highlights, toner, or color correction. Real factors that change how much hair color and developer you actually need.

02

Pick your brand

Wella Koleston Perfect, Wella Color Touch, L'Oreal Majirel, L'Oreal INOA, Schwarzkopf Igora Royal, Redken Shades EQ, Matrix SoColor, Pravana ChromaSilk, Pulp Riot, Goldwell, Paul Mitchell and more. We pre-fill the correct mixing ratio (1:1, 1:1.5, or 1:2) so you don't have to look it up.

03

Get the exact formula

Color, developer, and total mixture in oz, grams, or ml, with the right developer volume (10, 20, 30, or 40) for your goal. Save it to the client's profile in Goldie so the next visit takes seconds, not minutes.

Color theory

The hair color level chart.

Hair color levels run from 1 (deepest black) to 10 (lightest blonde) on the international level system. When you mix two levels in equal parts, the result lands roughly in the middle. This is the foundation of every formula, whether you're working with permanent color, demi-permanent, toner, or lightener.

Levels 1 to 10

A 6 mixed with an 8 in equal parts gives you a 7. Stay within 2 to 3 levels of difference for predictable results, and remember that natural underlying pigment shifts from red at level 1 through orange in the 5-6 range to yellow at 9-10.

Pro tips

Common mistakes (and how to avoid them).

Always weigh, don't pour

A digital scale gives consistent mixes every time. Volume estimates from a tube are off by 10 to 15 percent on average.

Mix what you need, plus 10 percent

Mixed color is only active for 30 to 60 minutes. Better to have a small surplus than to run out mid-application.

! Don't mix permanent with demi

Different oxidation chemistries. Mixing them gives unpredictable lift, deposit, and processing time.

! More developer doesn't mean more lift

Adding developer above the ratio dilutes pigment and gives weaker, faster-fading color. Increase developer volume instead, not amount.

Questions

Things stylists ask us.

Quick answers on hair color ratios, developer volumes, brand-specific mixes, bleach, and toner.

How much hair color do I need for shoulder-length hair?+
For shoulder-length hair with medium density, plan on about 3 oz of total mixture. At a 1:2 ratio that's roughly 1 oz of color and 2 oz of developer. At 1:1 it's 1.5 oz of each. Adjust up to 25 percent more for thick or coarse hair, and down to 25 percent less for fine hair. The calculator above does this math for you automatically.
How much hair dye do I need for long hair?+
For long hair past mid-back with medium density, plan on 4 to 6 oz of total mixture, or about 120 to 180 grams. Waist-length hair can need 6 to 8 oz, especially if it's thick or coarse. Fine hair absorbs faster and may need 25 percent less. The calculator above adjusts automatically when you select length and density. For shorter cuts, a pixie usually needs about 1.5 oz, and chin-length sits around 2 oz.
What is the most common hair color to developer ratio?+
The most common ratio for permanent hair color is 1:1.5, meaning one part color to one and a half parts developer. L'Oreal Majirel uses 1:1.5, while Wella Koleston and Schwarzkopf Igora Royal use 1:1, and Wella Color Touch demi-permanent uses 1:2. Always check the product packaging for line-specific exceptions, especially high-lift series and toners.
What's the difference between 10, 20, 30, and 40 volume developer?+
Developer volume controls how much lift you get. 10 volume (3% peroxide) is for deposit-only work like demi-permanent toners and refreshing color. 20 volume (6% peroxide) covers gray and lifts one level, used with most permanent color. 30 volume (9% peroxide) lifts two levels, common for high-lift blondes and lighteners on darker bases. 40 volume (12% peroxide) gives maximum lift, but it's harsh on hair and scalp, so most pros use it only for off-scalp lightening with bleach.
What's the mixing ratio for Wella Koleston Perfect?+
Wella Koleston Perfect uses a 1:1 mixing ratio for most permanent shades, meaning equal parts color and Welloxon Perfect developer. For Special Blonde and high-lift shades in the 12 series, the ratio shifts to 1:2 to push the lift. A standard tube is 60 grams. Wella Color Touch demi-permanent uses 1:2 with the Color Touch Emulsion only, never with standard developer.
What's the mixing ratio for L'Oreal Majirel and INOA?+
L'Oreal Majirel uses 1:1.5, meaning 50 ml of color mixes with 75 ml of L'Oreal Oxydant cream developer. INOA, the ammonia-free permanent line, uses 1:1 with INOA Rich oxidant only. Dia Light demi-permanent uses 1:1.5. Increase developer slightly for resistant gray coverage on level 1 to 4.
How do I mix two hair colors together?+
When mixing two hair color shades, the resulting level is the weighted average of the two, and the tones blend on the color wheel. Equal parts of a level 6 and a level 8 give roughly a level 7. Stay within 2 to 3 levels of difference for predictable results, and never mix permanent with demi-permanent. The calculator above lets you adjust the split between two or three colors with a slider, so you can build custom 60/40 or 70/30 formulas.
What's the bleach to developer ratio for hair lightening?+
Most professional bleach (lightener powder) mixes at 1:2, one part bleach to two parts developer. Schwarzkopf Blondme uses 1:2, Wella Blondor uses 1:1.5 to 1:2, and Redken Flash Lift uses 1:2. Always weigh bleach with a digital scale, since powder is unreliable to measure by volume. Pair off-scalp lightening with 30 or 40 volume developer, and on-scalp work with 10 or 20 volume.
Can I save hair color formulas for each client?+
Yes. With Goldie, every client has a profile where you can save their exact color formula, developer volume, processing time, and notes from past visits. The next time they book, you have the formula ready before they sit in the chair. Goldie also helps you collect deposits, send reminders, and process payments, all in one app.
